High court

The imposing indo-Saracenic building of the High Court is an important landmark. Its stained glass arches and minarets are wonderful. The foundation was laid in 1889 and completed in 1892. Besides taking four years, it has consumed 13 lakhs. In its tallest minaret rising 160 feet above sea level, the Madras Lighthouse was erected in 1894.Another tall building which was once the tallest in the city – the Rare House could also be seen in the parry’s corner.

The Government Estate
On Anna Salai, it was originally the garden house of the president of Chennai Council.
Successive British Governors preferred to live here rather than in the Fort. The Rajaji Hall in the Estate used to be the Banqueting Hall of the then Government House.

Fort St.George

Fort St. George is an important historical landmark in Chennai. It was built by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, the founding fathers of Chennai and officials of the British East India Company. It was the first settlement and was under French occupation for a brief period.

The Fort Museum
Formally opened in 1948 houses the fine collections of original writings of the various personalities who made Chennai history for about a century. Portraits of past governors, painting of the storming of Srirangapatnam and scenes of earlier Chennai adorn walls. Medieval weapons, collection of coins, uniforms and costumes, medals, silverware, porcelain, manuscripts, engravings and other relics of the Raj are on display. A spectacular history of the past rolls in our minds. The marble statue of Cornwallis and Tipu handing over his children depicted on its pedestal bring to our eyes the Carnatic Wars.

The towering flagstaff
The towering flagstaff on the ramparts facing the sea and atop the main gate is over 150’ high and is still the tallest in India. Daily flag hoisting is done. It is said the Governor Yale was the man who first hoisting the Union jack over fort St. George in 1687. Location: Kamarajar Salai, Fort St. George,
Chennai-9 Holiday: Friday. Timings: 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. phone: 91-44-25670276
