High court

The imposing indo-Saracenic building of the High Court is an important landmark. Its stained glass arches and minarets are wonderful. The foundation was laid in 1889 and completed in 1892. Besides taking four years, it has consumed 13 lakhs. In its tallest minaret rising 160 feet above sea level, the Madras Lighthouse was erected in 1894.Another tall building which was once the tallest in the city – the Rare House could also be seen in the parry’s corner.

The Government Estate
On Anna Salai, it was originally the garden house of the president of Chennai Council.
Successive British Governors preferred to live here rather than in the Fort. The Rajaji Hall in the Estate used to be the Banqueting Hall of the then Government House.
